"Now we have TWO very
compelling suspects: Richard Eberling and James Call.
Neither of these suspects were ever properly investigated
by the authorities at any time from 1954 until now.
Cayahoga county prosecutors continue to insist that my
father murdered my mother, ignoring all other possible
suspects. As happens today, when the wrong person is
convicted, the true murderer goes free - often to kill
again. I urge everyone to read both of these books, and to
examine all of the evidence available. And know that if
this can happen to my family, it can happen to
yours...."

The real-life
murder that became known as “The Fugitive” case began before dawn on
July 4, 1954, in a Cleveland suburb, when Marilyn Sheppard was
viciously beaten to death in her bed. After an inadequate
investigation, her husband, Dr. Sam Sheppard, was charged with the
crime, and a chain of events was set in motion that has caused more
speculation, more publicity, and more cultural myth than any other
American murder.

"James Neff is an award-winning
investigative journalist who, over the past ten years, has assembled
the most compete set of Sheppard records in existence, including DNA
analyses and interviews with every living person central to the
case. He has also gained unprecedented access to crime-scene
evidence that shows conclusively that Sam Sheppard did not murder
his wife–and points to the man who did. Peeling away the layers of
fiction surrounding the case, Neff uncovers the factual events and
the key players in a story that until now has been shrouded in
mystery. The Wrong Man is a landmark work, a gripping narrative, and
indeed the final verdict on America’s most famous unsolved
murder."

"Tailspin is truly unique
in that rarely has such prodigious investigation been undertaken in
connection with a literary work of this nature. A cornerstone of the
book is the appendix describing the scope of the research such as
forensic examinations, field investigations by private investigators
(many of whom were former FBI agents) as well as countless hours of
tape recorded interviews, all of which support the stunning
revelations disclosed in the narrative. Best-selling author and
former FBI agent Bernard Con ners employs a dramatized, yet factual,
narrative to present a gripping account of his charming but deadly
protagonist."

The Beginning
Sam Reese Sheppard's journey began the morning of July 4,
1954, when he was awakened by a relative and hustled outside
into the glare of photographers flash bulbs. He was told simply that
his mother had "gone to be with the angels," and that for
some unexplained reason, he could not see his father. Sam Reese
Sheppard was 7 years old. Five months later, the State of Ohio asked
a jury to condemn his father, Dr. Sam H. Sheppard, to death for the
murder of his pregnant mother.
The Sheppard murder case, now almost 50 years old and never officially
closed or even properly investigated by law enforcement officials, is one
of the most well known criminal cases of the 20th century. It was the basis for
a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision, (Sheppard v. Maxwell) which still
stands today, and it is commonly thought to have inspired numerous film and
television programs, including "The Fugitive."
After years of legal wrangling, Sam Reese Sheppard's
lawsuit seeking a declaration of wrongful incarceration from the
State of Ohio for his father was heard in Cleveland in February,
March and April, 2000. Incredibly, a jury chose to ignore the
science and instead decided that the Sheppard Team was unable to
meet the burden of proof that Dr. Sheppard was innocent.
