DEAR FRIEND,
SAM REESE SHEPPARD'S journey began the morning of July 4, 1954, when
he was
awakened by a relative and hustled outside into the glare of
photographers
flash bulbs. He was told simply that his mother had "gone to be with
the
angels," and that for some unexplained reason, he could not see his
father.
Sam Reese Sheppard was 7 years old. Five months later, the State of
Ohio
asked a jury to condemn his father, Dr. Sam H. Sheppard, for the
murder of
his pregnant mother.
THE SHEPPARD MURDER CASE, now more than 50 years old and never
officially
closed or even properly investigated, is one of the most well known
criminal cases of this century. It was the basis for a landmark U.S.
Supreme Court decision (Sheppard v. Maxwell), as well as numerous
film and
television programs, including "The Fugitive."
BECAUSE of the incredible scrutiny of the media on Sam and the
Sheppard
case, Sam has asked Citizens United for Alternatives to the Death
Penalty
to help him focus media attention in order to raise awareness about
these
issues of great concern:
- Wrongful convictions
- The need for true compassion for the survivors of homicide
- Alternatives to the Death Penalty
THE INJUSTICES done to the Sam Sheppard's family are not unique. The
families of homicide victims across the country continue to be abused
by a
justice system less concerned with the truth than with political
expedience. More often than anyone cares to admit, the wrong person
is sent
to prison.
WITHOUT MONEY and media support, bringing such cases to higher
scrutiny is
now much more difficult than it was at the time that Dr. Sheppard was
wrongfully imprisoned. Citizens United for Alternatives to the Death
Penalty (CUADP) supports Sam's efforts by sponsoring and coordinating
this
web page, and by coordinating and assisting Sam's activism to raise
awareness about alternatives to the death penalty, with a special
focus on
the wrongfully convicted.
Your contribution of $18, $36, $72 or $144 (or more, or less) will
